NGO Moviment Graffitti, the Youth for Palestine movement, and the Palestinian Embassy in Malta joined forces to organise a demonstration in front of the Parliament building in Valletta yesterday, condemning the Israeli occupation and calling for Malta to recognise Palestine as an independent state.

“This afternoon, we gathered once again outside the Maltese Parliament to call for an end to the genocide in Gaza and a free Palestine,” the organisations stated.

“This is a demonstration against the massacres happening in Rafah in the face of the Palestinian people,” they continued.

They explained that the reason for their demonstration is “not only to condemn these atrocities by the Israeli occupation but also to encourage the Maltese Government to recognise the State of Palestine.”

“Right now, Israel is intensifying its massacre in Rafah – a small city sheltering a million and a half Palestinians who had fled the genocidal aggression in the rest of Gaza,” Moviment Graffitti and Youth For Palestine wrote in a social media statement, attaching several photos from the Valletta demonstration.

“Our eyes will remain fixed on Gaza,” they said, adding that “[their] hearts will continue beating for the Palestinian people”.

Many were pictured wearing scarves with the colours of the Palestinian flag, and many were waving flags of Palestine, including several children.

“Our disgust will remain towards countries such as the United States, Germany, and Britain who have enabled the dispossession of Palestinians by Israel for 76 years, and are now supporting genocide,” the organisations wrote.

Two days ago, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said she is “flabbergasted” that Prime Minister Robert Abela hasn’t yet recognised a Palestinian state, in an exclusive comment to Lovin Malta.

Spain, Ireland, and Norway recently formally recognised a Palestinian state based on the borders established before the 1967 war, with Jerusalem as the capital of both Israel and Palestine. Slovenia is set to follow suit too.
