Ongoing works to downscale the popular roundabout by the former Lowenbrau factory in Qormi will  involve the uprooting of a few trees, including mature olive trees, Transport Malta has confirmed.

However, Malta’s transport authority confirmed the trees will not be destroyed, but rather re-planted in the same roundabout or in other green areas close by.

“A very small number of trees, including olive trees, currently located in this roundabout will need to be uprooted as part of this project,” a Transport Malta spokesperson confirmed with Lovin Malta. “These trees are being re-planted in the same roundabout. Trees that cannot be accommodated in the same roundabout will be replanted in other landscaped areas close by.”

“We engaged a biodiversity consultant to coordinate these works and ensure that these trees are adequately protected.”

The roundabout links Triq Hal-Qormi with Triq Manuel Dimech, a street notorious for traffic congestion. Indeed, Transport Malta said over 2,300 passenger vehicles and 310 heavy vehicles use the roundabout every hour during peak times.

As part of Transport Malta’s plans to improve traffic flows across Malta, the roundabout will be downscaled and Triq Manuel Dimech will be expanded to accommodate two lanes on both sides, while a small junction will be set up just outside the Marsa Park and Ride.

Other ongoing roadworks are targeting traffic flows at the Kordin roundabout in Paola and the roundabout connecting Luqa to Gudja,
