Family minister Michael Falzon has today confirmed that the office of the commissioner for children is currently discussing the television series ‘Akila’, following a question regarding a Lovin Malta article that called out the show’s treatment of young models. The NET TV show is a local reality show that features various Maltese models trying to get a shot in the business, including several young models between the ages on 13 and 17.

The commissioner “expressed concern at certain comments made by member of the programme’s panel” Falzon said, following a question by government whip Byron Camilleri.

“The commissioner also did not agree with the programme’s setup, particularly the broad range of ages of the participants.”

Currently, the commissioner’s office is monitoring the show, and will be discussing it with the Broadcasting Authority to ensure that it is in the children’s “best interest”.

Owen Bonnici, Minister of Justice and Culture, has also confirmed that the Broadcasting Authority is currently investigating the television show, and are “evaluating the case”.
