St Julian’s Residents Call For Help As Derelict Building In Spinola Bay Falls To Pieces

A prominent building in Spinola Bay that is literally falling to pieces has led to an outcry among St Julian’s residents, with images of the state of the derelict building doing the rounds on social media in recent days.

“It is a mess – it’s been a mess for all of my life,” a local resident told Lovin Malta. “The place has been falling down for more than ten years; the lady who lived in it refused to leave even after it started falling down, until her family forced her out. It’s just a really old building that was never taken care of.”

While various individuals lived in the building since the 90s, it has been derelict for the last half a decade, with local fishermen using some of the rooms on the lower floors as store rooms in recent years.

“When are authorities going to take steps against the disaster that’s here in St. Julian’s?” Charles Bartolo asked in a post alongside the shocking photos. “They’ll take action when someone dies – it’s been like this for years, shameful.”

“Exposed water pipe, derelict steps and a rubbish dumping area,” said another local resident.

The deputy mayor of St. Julian’s local council also commented on the post

“Fully agree,” he said in response to calls for someone to address the building. “The respective authorities concerned are closing their eyes to an incident waiting to happen.”
