‘Resign Immediately’ MEP David Casa Calls For Central Bank Governor Edward Scicluna To Step Down After Charges Reports

PN MEP David Casa has urged Malta’s Central Bank Governor Edward Scicluna to step down from his position following reports of criminal charges against him in connection with the fraudulent sale of public hospitals to Vitals Global Healthcare.

Scicluna was finance minister at the time of the Vitals deal.

“Your continued tenure at the Central Bank will irreparably damage the reputation of our country as a financial centre,” Casa warned.

“It would be disastrous to have key figures in the country’s key officeholders that are meant to convince the world of the nation’s regulatory integrity while concurrently fighting criminal charges over their own impropriety.”

Casa went on to say that while the presumption of innocence is a legal principle afforded to all citizens, “these are sensitive positions on which sectors of our economy and Maltese livelihoods depend and there cannot be a shadow of doubt about the rectitude of those occupying them.”

“I call on you to demonstrate the integrity you were once perceived to have and to do the right thing and resign your post immediately,” Casa stated.

Additionally, Casa urged President of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde to monitor the situation closely and mitigate any damage to the reputation of Malta resulting from Scicluna’s tenure while facing criminal charges.

Scicluna has refrained from making public statements since the magistrate’s inquiry report was completed and submitted to the Attorney General. Previously, he maintained that he had not engaged in any wrongdoing.

Yesterday, Repubblika lawyer Jason Azzopardi took to social media to say that criminal charges have been filed against deputy Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, his then chief of staff Keith Schembri and former minister Konrad Mizzi.

He later wrote that Scicluna is one of the individuals facing “serious charges which carry with them years of imprisonment.”
