Roaming Pig Gang Finally Taken In By Marsaskala Animal Sanctuary: ‘No One Could Catch Them’
A gang of eight “fast, strong, and smart” pigs which had been roaming residential streets for years were finally captured by an animal sanctuary based in Marsaskala.
Sunshine Animal Sanctuary, which operates as an NGO, successfully carried out the challenging mission of catching the pigs and taking them to safety, with the sanctuary then chipping and neutering them.
Now, they are in the process of rehoming them, and they need your help.
“These pigs had been roaming the streets for many years which was a major cause for concern to local residents,” the sanctuary wrote on Facebook.
“Wandering in the roads bringing about safety issues, going onto people’s property causing damage, and ripping open rubbish bags and creating a huge mess was just a few of the challenges faced.”
“Of course, this wasn’t the pigs’ fault. They were doing what was needed in order to survive. In fact, one local resident said she even saw the pigs desperately drinking water that had been tipped from a bucket onto the street, which was surely dirty and contained cleaning products…”
“Nobody knew what to do, as the pigs were strong, fast, and smart and knew the area like the back of their hooves.”
After having captured the pigs, chipped them, and neutered them, the sanctuary now needs some help to cover the hefty bill.
“On average, the neutering and chipping cost €150 per pig. Along with transportation costs, food and bedding, this has all added up. Furthermore, we currently already have six pigs in our care (four of whom are up for adoption) along with many other rescue animals.”
“We are happy to put in the time, energy and effort needed to rescue animals and run Sunshine, but unfortunately, we do not have trees that grow money in our backyard,” they said.
