A Romanian woman was detained at Malta International Airport in connection with a suspected string of pickpocket robberies in June.

Police stated that following in-depth and extensive investigations into a number of pickpocketing thefts, a 41-year-old woman from Romania was apprehended before attempting to leave the country.

The police revealed that the woman allegedly forms part of a group involved in internationally organised crimes, conducting pickpocketing on individuals gathered in tourist areas.

“They use crowds to their advantage and steal from the victims,” the police said in a statement.

Investigations revealed that between 8th and 23rd June 2024, the woman had allegedly committed over 20 robberies.

“Her targets were tourists in Belt Valletta, Mdina, and San Pawl il-Baħar, where she would steal people’s wallets and purses,” police stated.

A total of around €7,000 in cash was stolen by the suspected thief.

The Romanian woman was arrested on Thursday at the airport after police identified the suspected perpetrator. A police statement revealed that prior to her arrest, the woman planned on fleeing the country.

She is currently being held at the lockup located in the police’s General Quarters in Floriana. She was taken to court at around 11 am, where she appeared in front of Magistrate Marseann Farrugia.
