A new collective agreement has been signed between the Lands Authority and the General Workers’ Union (GWU), through which 200 employees will benefit from salary increases and the introduction of new allowances.

The signing took place in the presence of the Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici, Permanent Secretary Joyce Cassar, and Permanent Secretary Kevin Mahoney.

Minister Bonnici explained that this collective agreement will bring salary increases and allowances for employees, with the aim of improving their overall compensation and benefits packages. He emphasised that the purpose of a collective agreement is not solely financial, but also to provide clear guidance on working conditions, serving as an inspiration for future employees.

“This is truly a government that invests in our workers, and our goal is to provide fair and just remuneration to employees for their work. Together we are working to ensure that workers have the opportunity to keep advancing in their personal careers,” Dr Bonnici said.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Lands Authority, Robert Vella, stated:
“The signing of the new 2025–2028 collective agreement represents an important step in the continual development of the Lands Authority. This agreement reflects months of constructive dialogue and collaboration with the GWU, aimed at creating better and more modern conditions for our employees. I want to reaffirm the collective effort our workers make to serve with dedication and passion every day. I am proud of their commitment and contribution, and I know that this agreement will offer recognition and appreciation for the diligent work they carry out daily.”

The GWU’s Secretary General, Josef Bugeja, said:
“Today, as the GWU, we have signed two important collective agreements, one for professionals and another for technical and administrative staff. Over these past days I have clearly seen that today, more than ever, workers not only have careers but also concrete opportunities to continue developing their skills. This agreement provides clear direction and vision to all workers as well as to the Authority, and strengthens our commitment towards a more professional, modern and fair future.”

As the new agreement comes into effect, both the Lands Authority and the GWU say they remain committed to building a stronger, fairer and more modern workplace.

With improved conditions, clearer career pathways, and renewed investment in employees, the coming years are set to bring meaningful change for hundreds of workers and ultimately, for the public they serve.
