A sizeable crowd formed in Valletta this afternoon to protest against the continued use of horse-drawn carriages (karrozini) in Malta. The demonstration was organised following two shocking events in Malta involving horse-drawn carriages, including one incident that ended with a horse dying as he was drawing a carriage.
Waving placards with slogans like “Worked Till Death”, “Horses are not money-making machines” and “It’s 2018, not 1818”, the gathered people lamented a continued situation that led to what they termed as animal abuse.
The public death of 11-year-old Gringu the horse has re-opened the discussion on whether to ban horse-drawn carriages or not
The Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture Clint Camilleri has hinted that the government would be changing laws regulating horse-drawn carriages following the public outcry.
“I am saddened by the incident and I have instructed the Animal Welfare Department’s vets and officials to determine the exact cause of the horse’s death. I will monitor this situation closely so as to as holistically reduce such incidents as much as possible. We need to revise the laws regulating karozzini.”
