A group of seven Maltese people who were stuck in Israel as deadly conflict escalated over the weekend will soon be returning to the islands, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has confirmed in a statement.

“At this point in time, the ministry is informed that there are no Maltese people who are in the Palestinian territories,” the statement, issued in the last hour, reads.

“All the Maltese people (who for now amount to seven) who contacted the Maltese Embassy will be returning to Malta in the coming hours”.

It is being reported that some of these Maltese nationals may be musicians who were in Israel when the attacks started last Saturday.

The ministry took the opportunity to once again ask any Maltese nationals who have found themselves in the conflict zone to contact the embassy “as soon as possible” so that the necessary arrangements are made for them to be able to leave the country “in light of the present situation”.

As a long-standing conflict between Israel and Palestine escalated into a fully-fledged war following a surprise rocket attack by Hamas over the weekend, hundreds of people around Gaza have already been killed, with more attacks being launched by both sides.

Israel has reported at least 700 dead, with Palestine reporting a further 400, but the death toll is definitely expected to rise in the coming hours.

No Maltese people were injured or killed.
