At least seven people have been rescued from a sinking cabin cruiser off the coast of Sliema, just opposite Tower Road.

Maltese authorities were alerted to the ship in distress at around 12:15pm today and officers within the Armed Forces of Malta and police force immediately headed to Sliema to assist before the boat sunk.

It is unknown whether anyone was hurt as the ship sunk, or what led to the ship taking on water.

The rescue operation is ongoing.
