Shannon Mak, the 30-year-old Dutch woman found murdered by her ex-boyfriend Jelle Rijpma, had just returned from a staff party when she was murdered, the Maltese courts heard today. She was found with her throat slit on the 3rd of August in Santa Venera, her body thrown between two cars.

The couple had only recently broken up two weeks earlier. It was reported that Shannon had told numerous friends that although Jelle was a happy and positive person, when he drank alcohol he would became “a bit violent”.

Returning from her staff party on the evening of the 3rd of August, she entered Jelle’s home after she dropped him off from an event in Armier, even though he was known to have violent tendencies.

After entering his home, they began to argue

Shannon left his home in Triq l-Istampaturi in Santa Venera soon after entering, and Jelle chased after her carrying a knife about 4 to 6 inches long. It was with this knife that he slit her throat.

CCTV footage captured some of these moments on film, and were shown in court. Moments after committing the murder, Jelle is seen throwing the bloodied knife along with Shannon’s mobile onto a random nearby terrace.

After throwing the knife and mobile away, he returned to his residence where the police found him shortly after. He did not resist arrest, and was taken into custody, where he remains. His next court hearing will be held on the 25th of September.

Shannon’s family held a funeral party in memory of their beloved daughter just this week, and efforts are underway to bring her items back to Holland. Shannon was working in Malta at the time of her murder.
