‘Slum Zone’: Sarcastic Signs Pop Up At Manoel Island Mocking Malta’s Overdevelopment And Construction
In a striking display of public sentiment, sarcastic signs recently appeared on Manoel Island, boldly marked with the words “Slum Zone” to mock Planning Authority applications.
A photo sent to Lovin Malta captured the sign, a pointed commentary on Malta’s rapid overdevelopment and construction.
“Coming Soon! More destruction of Maltese heritage by the company responsible for the architectural disasters of Fort Cambridge and Tigné,” the sign reads.
Furthering its satirical approach, the sign states it is “paid for by the Local Council of Garbage Architecture and Useless Bureaucracy” and declares that “any objections to this permit will be ignored”.
Adding to its critique, the sign humorously notes, “Expect a reply in 12 working months and if you didn’t hear back please don’t call as we intentionally forgot about you and Maria is out of town until next month,” highlighting the frustrations people often encounter with applications.
This bold statement quickly captured the attention of passersby, highlighting growing concerns about the impact of unrestrained construction in Malta.
As development projects continue to transform Malta’s skyline, this sign serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between progress and preservation.
