Son-In-Law Of Notorious Mafia “Beast” Boss Totò Riina Arrested In Mosta
The son-in-law of deceased Sicilian mafia boss Totò Riina was arrested in Malta and has agreed to his extradition to Italy.
Palermo-born Antonio Ciavarello was arrested in Mosta yesterday morning, coincidentally the day after his 50th birthday, based on the European Arrest Warrant issued in Italy. The police confirmed that the warrant was issued by Italian Authorities on 24th January 2022.
Ciavarello is being sought by the Brindisi Public Prosecutor’s Office to serve a prison term following convictions for fraud and violation of police bail conditions.
The Sicilian was taken to court yesterday afternoon and was assisted by an interpreter throughout the proceeding where it was revealed that he had been residing in Mosta and employed as driver with a local company.
His legal aid lawyer stated that Ciavarello was aware of the sentences against him but did not know they were effective. They also explained that he never had any encounters with Maltese police or authorities, having been handed out a fine just once.
Documentation provided by prosecuting inspector Roderick Spiteri included correspondence with Italian authorities, confirming that the fingerprints of the wanted individual matched those of the individual arrested.
Ciavarello’s late father-in law was the notorious Sicilian mafia don who led the Corleonesi clan, Salvatore “Totò” Riina, famously portrayed in the Godfather movies.
He was dubbed the “beast” as he was known to ruthlessly target his criminal rivals in the 1980s and 90s, as well as journalists, prosecutors and judges who opposed him.
Riina passed away in a prison hospital bed in 2017 while serving 26 life sentences and was suspected of ordering the killings of over 150 individuals. Among his most prominent victims anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone, who he assassinated in a 1992 car bombing.
