St Michael’s Hospice: Malta’s First Palliative Care Complex Finally Opens Its Doors

Malta’s first ever palliative care complex has been inaugurated, marking a new frontier under the management of Hospice Malta.
As part of a €9 million investment from the National Development and Social Fund (NDSF) and European funds, this 15,000-square-metre property in St Venera will ensure that up to 1,500 patients and families supported by Hospice Malta will receive better and more dignified palliative care.
The target demographic that St Michael’s Hospice tailors to are individuals who are no longer receiving hospital care and cannot live in their homes.
The facility will provide an ample amount of services to its patients, including mental health services like psychotherapy. On top of that, the complex will be a place where individuals can be trained in the field of palliative care.
Additionally, a beautiful lush garden is fully accessible to patients and their families for some respite and serene downtime, especially during hard times.
In attendance, Prime Minister Robert Abela, underscored the essential role Hospice Malta plays in providing compassionate care to families in need, stressing that Malta’s economy should continue to drive support for social initiatives like this hospice project.
“The Malta I believe in is one that cares and shows love. A Malta where every family matters and receives support in challenging moments. In times of need, I assure these families that they will always find a Government behind them, providing assistance,” Abela emphasised.
Abela concluded by encouraging non-governmental organisations to view the Government as a key partner in achieving their goals for the betterment of society.
