A statue created from the remnants of the Italian Capaci massacre has just been unveiled in Valletta, as a symbolic message against organised crime.

The statue was unveiled by local NGOs Repubblika and Occupy Justice, together with Manuel Delia, as part of the programme of events leading up to the sixth year anniversary of the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

“We have just unveiled an art piece by the Italian artist Gerald Moroder, made from the remnants of the Capaci massacre, where 31 years ago the mafia killed Magistrate Giovanni Falcone, his wife, and the police escort,” Repubblika President Robert Aquilina said on social media.

“We are doing this as part of the activities for the sixth anniversary of the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, in collaboration with the Fondazione Falcone, the Province of Bolzano, and the Municipality of Ortisei.”

“While the mafia kills, art gives life and creates hope. Through this art piece, the remnants of that devastating explosion now serve as a reminder that in the end, good triumphs.”

“This should also serve as a warning to all those who stained their hands with the blood of Daphne Caruana Galizia, for all those who created the circumstances that facilitated Daphne’s assassination, and for all those who still serve the forces of darkness in our country.”

“We chose to place this statue in front of the Maltese Parliament because the government in parliament refuses to approve draft laws that combat the phenomenon of organised crime, specifically the mafia.”

Throughout the days leading up to 16th October, which marks six years since the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, an extensive programme of events will be executed, including an art exhibition, various discussions, and memorials.
