Teachers’ Union Will Protest At MCAST In Support Of ‘Assaulted Lecturer’

The Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) is organising a protest in solidarity with the lecturer who was assaulted by a student during an MCAST lesson.
“As a show of solidarity towards all MCAST grades and a manifestation of MUT’s zero tolerance towards aggression, the MUT is organising a protest for all MCAST grades on Wednesday 27th March at 11.00am. The protest shall be held at MCAST main campus in Paola,” the Union wrote earlier today.
“MUT refers to the assault which occurred at MCAST whereby a Senior Lecturer who is a member of MUT had to seek medical treatment,” it continued.
“MUT condemns all incidents involving violence in educational institutions and reiterates its zero tolerance approach.”
The union went on to say that it has “supported the affected Senior Lecturer throughout and shall continue to support all members.”
After the shocking video of the lecturer and the student coming to blows started making rounds online, MCAST told Lovin Malta that the institution filed a police report against the student.
A police spokesperson told the newsroom that the investigation is currently underway and there are no updates as of yet.
When asked about their opinion on Student Representative Jordan Galea Pace’s statement that the student should be given community service rather than be expelled, the Education Ministry said this: “At this particular moment, it’s better for the interest of all those involved to let the institution and the established procedures take their course. Any further comment would be futile and damaging to the student and educator involved.
