Last night’s football match between Italy and Sweden shocked the world: Italy haven’t missed a World Cup in 60 years, and in a country like Malta, where approximately 50% of the country supports the Italian football team, this news was disastrous.

For many Italian fans, it means that next year’s World Cup is ruined – but for many others, the fun was just beginning.

People took to social media to mercilessly mock the Italian fans, taking great enjoyment from their compatriots’ broken hearts.

Everyone knows about the classic rivalry between Italian fans and English fans in Malta. But last night’s loss was just too much for most people to keep their mouths shut.

As their fellow Maltese brethren watched their football dreams – and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon’s last ever chance at a World Cup – shatter before their eyes, many people whipped out the iPhone and started giggling and typing.
