The Ugly Truth Behind Malta’s Racism Mapped Out
Time to wake up and smell the reality guys: it seems that Malta is in need of some major soul-searching. A post making its way across Facebook highlights a series of maps created by a Reddit user based on a study carried out by the EU Commission in 2015.
As one of the EU member states, Malta has had its say, and boy are we in hot water.
1. Dating someone of a different ethnicity is apparently not on
It seems that only 40-49% of all Maltese people would be comfortable if their child was dating someone of Asian or Afro-Caribbean descent.
2. And let’s not get into religion
Love thy neighbour? Sure. So long as they’re not Muslims or Jews.
40-49% of Maltese people are happy to have their kids date Jews and only 30-39% would do the same for a Muslim suitor.
3. If we had to choose the perfect Prime Minister they would be…
… a straight white cis-gender able-bodied Catholic male of middle-age. At least according to the results of the EU Commission’s study.
Yay for diversity everyone!
4. Education is important… but no sex-ed please
Over 80% of the Maltese participants believed that we need increased diversity in teachings on ethnicity and religious beliefs. When it comes to broaching sexual orientation and gender identity however, that number plummets to the 70s. Considering current first place position on the Rainbow Europe index, these figures are rather disappointing.
Thankfully this number is higher than the mean of the EU28 countries – it appears there is light at the end of the tunnel.
5. There is hope after all
Malta places ahead of the EU28 when it comes to favouring training in the workplace on topics such as discrimination, equal opportunities, recruitment policies, and a balanced workforce. This is by no means a solution, but it is a start.
Either way, Malta needs to pull up its socks: we have a long road ahead of us.
