Although uncommon in Malta, earthquakes can still cause some major anxiety to some people and some older structures across the island.

While most people quickly rush to Facebook for a quick Ħassejtu? status update after feeling a tremor, one must wonder- what you should do if you experience an earthquake in Malta?

Here’s what you should do in case an earthquake hits in Malta:

If you’re inside, stay inside. Rule of thumb here is Drop, Cover and Hold On.

This refers to you dropping to your hands and knees to avoid falling, cover your head, neck and ideally as much of your body as you can under a sturdy piece of furniture. Lastly hold on to either your makeshift shelter to keep it in place or hold onto your head and neck in case of whiplash or falling debris.

2. If you’re outside, stay outside.

Main points here are try to avoid condensed built up areas and if you’re in a crowded public area, make sure to take cover somewhere you won’t be trampled.

3. If you’re in the car or any public transport, stay calm and in your seat.

When possible stop at the side of the road to allow others to pass. Remain in the car and wait to be rescued if there is debris in the roads like fallen trees and lamp posts.
