Transport Malta Investigating Extensive Oil Spill Stretching From Manoel Island To Tigné
Transport Malta has launched an investigation into an oil slick that polluted large parts of Marsamxett Harbour, stretching from Manoel Island to Tigné.
The spill is believed to have originated from a private facility on Manoel Island, specifically the Manoel Island Yacht Yard. Authorities are looking into why the leak was not contained sooner, as photos and videos showed oil forming a rainbow-coloured film across the water.
The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) confirmed that the spill involved “used oil” and cleanup efforts were initiated using specialised equipment. However, initial photographs revealed that a significant amount of oil remained in the sea.

Yesterday, Transport Malta released a brief statement acknowledging the situation and confirming that an investigation into the spill was underway. They also stated that they would “take all necessary steps and investigate the shortcomings that led to the failure” implying that action would be taken against those responsible for the marine pollution.
Health concerns led to the closure of a small bay near Tigné, while authorities set up a boom to contain the spread. Frustrated locals questioned the hours-long delay in responding to the spill, with many calling for greater transparency and swifter action in managing environmental hazards.
This morning, Transport Malta confirmed that the entire slick has now been cleaned up, and they are continuing to monitor the situation to ensure all traces of the oil are fully removed.
