Two Incoming, Five To Go: You’ll Soon Be Able To Drive On Marsa’s First Flyover

Marsa’s behemoth junction project has hit a milestone as over a third of the works are now complete, Infrastructure Malta confirmed this morning.

“35% of the Marsa Junction Project is ready,” IM announced on Facebook following a press briefing, going on to give additional detail on the €70-million multi-flyover project at the heart of the project.

As work on all seven of the projected flyovers is currently in progress, IM went on to promise that the first two flyover structures, those connecting Aldo Moro Road to Luqa, would be completed “by end September”. However, Infrastructure Malta CEO Frederick Azzopardi explained that, for the time being, only the northbound connection will be opened, with drivers being able to drive on the southbound lanes later on.

As far as the deadlines on the other structures go, Azzopardi went on to say that two other flyovers are expected to be completed by January 2020.

Hoping to fix congestion issues on the island’s busiest junction, the project will have a dedicated carriageway for every major artery.

Each of the seven flyovers will be taking care of a major route in an effort to reduce traffic jams on “the main link for the south of Malta”, where some 8,000 vehicles go through during each peak hour.

The completed works are expected to also include Park & Ride facilities, bus lanes, cycle lanes and pedestrian passageways… not to mention the widening of the main Aldo Moro Road from six to 10 lanes closing off 2018.
