Two Spanish Women Confused As Maltese Court Punishes Them For Growing Weed For Personal Use
It feels like Malta is still kind of confused over its position on medical marijuana. We want it, we legalised it back in March, but we don’t exactly want people to be using it so much. Well, two Spanish girls got to experience the brunt of this problem.
Two young Spanish women, a 27 and a 31-year-old, were handed a one-year prison term, suspended for two years after being accused for growing, cultivating, importing and possessing marijuana.
The girls were quite confused by the measures taken against them. In Spain you can grow up to 20 grams of marijuana and two plants in your home, and it’s totally legal. They were caught with 19 grams and one plant.
In Spain you can also only be punished for possession when caught with it in a public space, and not your own home.
Malta’s position on weed
Malta legalised weed earlier this year, and we’re commonly internationally recognised throughout the EU as being tolerant when it comes all things marijuana-related. So it could be the reason why these Spanish women thought that casually smoking a doobie in their living room wouldn’t amount to much.
But what our amigas weren’t aware of was that we’re still new at this and there’s still some time before coffeeshops and cannabis social clubs will be a thing here in Malta. For now just stick to the 3.5 grams rule, chicas.
