Unlicensed Bouncer Ryan Zammit Breaks Down In Tears After Bail Request Is Denied Over NYE Beating
Ryan Zammit, the 26-year-old Maltese man from Gżira who today became the second person to be charged over a viral Paceville bouncer beating which was filmed on the last night of 2023, has pleaded not guilty to the chargers brought against him… eventually breaking into tears as his bail request was denied.
During today’s court hearing, it actually emerged that Zammit did not have a license to work as a security guard in the first place, with the young man saying he did not work when asked what his job was.
Zammit was arrested this morning after a mandate was issued yesterday. The young man’s identity was established after police poured through exclusive footage published by Lovin Malta earlier this week. In the video, Zammit and four other men can be seen brutally beating up Sudanese MCAST student Idriss Ahmed Adem.
But while Attorney General lawyer Etienne Savona highlighted the gravity of the case, Zammit’s lawyer Herman Mula clapped back by saying “gravity does not depend on media coverage”, saying there are so many similar cases like this, and “if all such cases, especially those in Paceville, are charged under arrest, duty magistrates would face some 50 cases daily”.

Another man filmed hitting and kicking Adem, 21-year-old Albanian national Riald Gragjevi, was arrested at the airport on Wednesday and charged yesterday. He also pleaded not guilty, saying he was actually the victim in the whole ordeal after being stabbed by Adem with a broken glass bottle.
Zammit’s bail request was denied, especially in light of the fact that the victim and civilian witnesses (including those who filmed the videos) still needed to testify. As this was announced, the Maltese man reportedly sobbed loudly in court.
