Unveiling Creativity: Call For Monument Designs Honouring Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici

An initiative aimed at giving well-deserved recognition to a beloved statesman who dedicated his life to the principles he believed in and tirelessly worked for has been announced. 

The Minister for National Heritage Owen Bonnici, along with Heritage Malta and the Office of the Prime Minister, has made a call for proposals for the design of a monument dedicated to the esteemed former Prime Minister, Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici. This monument will find its rightful place in Castille Square, Valletta, serving as a lasting tribute to his contributions to Malta’s history.

During the press conference, Bonnici highlighted Dr Mifsud Bonnici’s exceptional values, including his unwavering honesty, humility, and deep commitment to altruism. 

CEO of Heritage Malta, Noel Zammit expressed his privilege in announcing the creation of this monumental tribute, emphasising the organisation’s commitment to preserving Malta’s rich heritage for future generations. 

Interested artists are invited to submit their designs for a figurative bronze sculpture that captures the essence of Dr Mifsud Bonnici’s legacy. The artistic style will be at the discretion of the creator, allowing for a diverse range of interpretations. The scope of the project includes the design and construction of the monument, including the pedestal and ancillary works such as lighting. The indicative budget for the entire process is approximately €150,000.

A jury of experts will evaluate the submitted projects, taking into account the proposed breakdown of costs accompanying each entry. For detailed information and submission guidelines, interested participants can visit https://heritagemalta.mt/public-calls/.

Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici, born on July 17th, 1933, in Cospicua, made significant contributions to Malta throughout his career as a lawyer and lecturer. His political journey led him to serve as Minister of Labour and Social Services, Senior Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Education, and ultimately, as Prime Minister from December 22nd, 1984.

Dr Mifsud Bonnici passed away on November 5th, 2022.
