Vjal Kulħadd: New Project Promoting Greener And Safer Public Spaces Kicks Off

Chris Bonett, the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works announced that the first project of the ‘Vjal Kulħadd’ initiative on the main route connecting Żejtun and Ħaż-Żabbar was a success.

This initiative aims to improve community environments by identifying suitable roads and public spaces around the island where in collaboration with local councils, the areas would be made safer and more pleasing to the eye.

With extensive work, the project includes a road stretching for a kilometre specifically designed with pedestrians and cyclists in mind, with native trees planted along the way.

This project promotes a greener and more sustainable environment, and includes a reservoir constructed to handle flooding in the area. The collected water is aimed to be repurposed by local farmers for the irrigation of their fields.

With a repaved road, modern lighting and traffic systems which ensure safe speed limits, this project is a great step towards greener, safer and more accessible public spaces.

The inauguration of the project was in collaboration with multiple local organisations where for one day, the road was closed to motor vehicles and turned into the perfect place for a family day out!

With various activities, including bicycle training with experienced instructors for both adults and children to participate in, this initiative creates alternate transport routes which encourages car drivers to choose cycling or walking instead.

Bonett extended his gratitude to the workers and local residents for their cooperation and help throughout the project, and expressed his satisfaction with the end result seeing the space transformed into one that promotes a more active lifestyle and benefits the environment as well.

“Initiatives like this clearly reflect the government’s vision—an infrastructure that prioritises people at its core,” concluded Chris Bonett.

“In the coming months, more streets will come to life through this initiative, promoting alternative mobility and creating additional open spaces at the heart of our communities,” Steve Ellul, Chief Executive of Infrastructure Malta added.

By the end of 2026, we are set to see more changes like this, with 14 different areas across villages in Malta to receive the same treatment thanks to an investment exceeding €10,000,000.

What do you think of this initiative to promote a greener, safer and more active Malta?
