Gorgeous filming locations are hard to come by, and some of the best are instantly recognisable on the silver screen. Everyone who’s ever watched a film or TV series shot in Malta knows the excited rush of recognising your country, and our island’s signature look definitely helps. Now, Valletta’s most iconic fort stands to win the best film location in all of Europe!

Standing at the tip of the capital peninsula, Fort St. Elmo has seen its fair share of blockbusters coming to life. Most recently, the Valletta fort was showcased in the 2017 Murder on the Orient Express remake’s riveting opening scene, doubling up for the Wailing Wall of Jerusalem.

In recognition of St. Elmo’s sheer beauty, the Association of European Film Commissions (EUFCN) has shortlisted it as one of the finalists for the EUFCN Location Award.

Along with 12 other locations around the continent, St. Elmo has the chance to win an award for the best European location in the film and TV industries… particularly when it comes to film or fiction shot between January and December 2017.

Fort St. Elmo is currently in third place, but we need everyone’s help to push it up to first place!

The Malta Film Commission has hosted a long list of films being shot all over the island, including Risen, Assassin’s Creed, 13 Hours, World War Z, Kon Tiki, The Devil’s Double, Agora and Captain Phillips.

Built by the Knights in just four months in 1552, Fort St. Elmo opened in 2015 after rigorous restoration efforts. It now contains the National War Museum… along with numerous hidden spots just waiting for the next big blockbuster to be filmed!
