Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is set to speak at a campaign rally for Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba on Saturday, further fuelling speculation about his potential candidacy in the upcoming European Parliament elections.

This was confirmed by Labour broadcaster Manuel Cuschieri, a close associate of Muscat.

“I am telling you with the utmost certainty that Joseph Muscat will be present. He will be addressing all of you present there,” Cuschieri said in a Facebook live session.

“The event happens to fall on 9th March – one of the most important and memorable dates for the Labour Party, when we remember the massive election win in 2013,” he continued.

Agius Saliba’s rally will take place at City Gate, Valletta and will also feature addresses from Foreign Minister Ian Borg, Economy Minister Silvio Schembri, and outgoing MEP Alfred Sant.

Muscat, who stepped down as Prime minister and Labour Leader in January 2020, has made occasional appearances to endorse candidates since then, but Saturday’s event is his most significant involvement in politics since his resignation.

“With his presence in Labour’s MEP candidate list, the party will definitely achieve an impressive result,” Cuschieri said. “Next Saturday we will show a sign of encouragement to Joseph Muscat, so that we will make sure that our wishes are realised and the Labour Party has the best possible formation for the MEP elections,” he insisted.

Cuschieri went on to say that although his favourite football team, Inter, will be playing on the same day, whereas otherwise he would have stayed home to watch the match, this time he is willing to make an exception for Joseph Muscat and the Labour Party. “I choose Joseph Muscat and the Labour Party,” he reiterated.

In January, Cuschieri’s question to his listeners about Muscat’s candidacy in the European Parliament election stirred additional interest in Muscat’s future political plans.

Muscat told MaltaToday said that while he cannot rule out the possibility of running for the election, such a decision cannot be made hastily or without careful consideration to the possible impact on his family.
