Grech Mintoff threw eggs on the stage and tried to confront Abela before he was whisked away by security officials.

The ABBA leader said he staged a protest out of concern that the government was going against Malta’s constitutional neutrality by joining NATO’s partnership for peace and sending Maltese soldiers on NATO military missions.

Grech Mintoff, the nephew of former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff, who is often credited with Freedom Day, warned that these moves go against his late uncle’s fight for Malta’s neutrality.

“How can the Labour Party let him use Parliament and Mintoff’s Freedom Day monument to convince us that previous PL leaders lied to us? How can the PL government sign a deal with NATO when the Maltese people decided 45 years ago that it doesn’t want to get involved in other people’s wars or enter into military alliances?”
