Watch: Bomb Disposal Unit Called In To Sliema After ‘Suspicious Luggage’ Spotted On Front

Police officers, the army’s Bomb Disposal Unit and even a patrol boat have cordoned off a section of the busy Sliema-Gżira front after a suspicious luggage was spotted earlier this afternoon.

Footage sent to Lovin Malta just before 2pm showed at least four police officers by the side of the road on Sliema’s Triq ix-Xatt, surveying the area and the marina right across the road.

It also appeared like a section of the pavement had been cordoned off with police tape, as a man in a suit could be seen taking some photos or videos with their phones of what appeared to be a boat just out in the marina.

Then, less than an hour later, more footage emerged of ongoing operation which also brought in the involvement of the Armed Forces of Malta.

At least one patrol boat and a couple of divers are now accompanying the number of police officers, and as officers from what is presumably the Ammunition & Explosive Squadron’s Explosive Ordnance Unit were filmed unpacking a number of boxes from a parked military vehicle, divers could be seen preparing oxygen tanks while a patrol boat could be seen approaching one of the anchored boats in the marina.

This is a developing story and not much information is currently available, but earlier this afternoon, police confirmed with Lovin Malta that it all started with a “suspicious luggage” being spotted in the area.
