Watch: Erratic Red School Van Swerves, Speeds And Overtakes Aggressively On Gżira Bypass

A red school van travelling along the bypass between Msida and Sliema, just after noon on Tuesday, was caught on camera performing a series of dangerous overtakes.

“With the kids he’s driving like this?” asked the driver who sent the dash cam footage to Lovin Malta.

Though this driver was caught on camera at around 12.34pm – and it is not clear that there were any children being transported – this footage contributes to the reputation of red school van drivers being reckless and overly-aggressive on Malta’s roads.

The first overtake was the closest call, when the driver lurched dangerously from the left lane into the right, flashing an indicator less than a second before beginning to drift out into the path of a dash-cam-equipped car.

Had the driver not reacted quickly enough, they would have collided, but he managed to hit the brakes, and the horn, in time to let the school van slip past.

The van-driver continued to gun it down the road, weaving between lanes across solid white lines to overtake other vehicles – even while inside a tunnel.

Fortunately, the van-driver was lucky in that they did not cause damage to themselves or any other driver on the road.

Many viewers familiar with Malta’s driving are likely underwhelmed by this footage, as we’ve all witnessed far worse. The fact that this footage isn’t shocking is a sign of how desensitised we’ve become.

Even “mild” examples like this point to the necessity for more thorough control over erratic and dangerous driving – particularly in light of rising rates of vehicular fatalities.
