Prior to this comment, Debono had been emphasizing the importance of promoting the values of commitment and self-discipline.

“If we want our country to be respected, even on an international level, we have to start teaching our children from a young, tender age,” she said.

“We have to teach our children that whatever they do, they have to do it well and for the good of others,” she continued, adding that it is important to train the country’s young ones in “the science of thinking”.

At that point, she remarked with a chuckle “Where is Clifton? I can’t see him

“This one is for you Clifton,” she told the Education Minister from the podium.

“We need to teach them how to think logically and rationally so that they can analyze situations they may encounter and the arguments presented to them. This will enable them to make sound decisions, not only for themselves but also for the benefit of others,” she continued.

The President then highlighted the importance of instilling young students with a sense of appreciation for their country.

“They should learn to love and value their country’s natural beauty by exploring every corner of it physically. Often, they may not even know the whereabouts of certain places. By doing so, they can develop a tangible and conscious appreciation for our country’s natural environment, which is currently under threat.”

“Furthermore, from a young age, we should provide them with an understanding of our rich history and culture. This will help them develop a stronger appreciation for our cultural identity,” Debono insisted.

She also stressed the importance of nurturing students with a passion for Maltese literature.
