Watch: ‘Hitting Journalists Means Striking At Democracy’ – Socialist MEP Honours Daphne Caruana Galizia In EU Parliament

An Italian MEP from the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group has paid tribute to late Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, marking eight years since her assassination.
Speaking at the opening of the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg on Monday, Sandro Ruotolo mentioned both Caruana Galizia and Italian journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, whose car was blown up by the mafia last week on the same date, 16th October.
“There are all kinds of ways of gagging journalists with intimidation, legal and illegal methods. But hitting journalists means striking at the heart of democracy,” Ruotolo told MEPs.
Ruotolo’s words come as the EU prepares for a debate on delayed justice and rule of law backsliding in Malta, set to take place on Tuesday, exactly eight years since Caruana Galizia was killed by a car bomb outside her home in Bidnija.
That same day, the Daphne Caruana Galizia Journalism Prize will also be awarded in her memory.
Meanwhile, Nationalist MEP Peter Agius shared a video of Ruotolo’s speech on social media, pointedly noting that while a member of the S&D group spoke up for Daphne:
“Maltese socialists keep sweeping away the candles, denying her truth, trying to minimise her legacy.”
