Watch: Marsa Passion Procession Stuns Onlookers With Realistic Performance
A Passion of the Christ procession held in Marsa stunned onlookers with a gripping performance of Jesus falling to the ground as he got whipped.
Footage posted by Instagram page @darkmaltatours shows the talented performers re-enacting the “moving sight” of Jesus walking barefoot and carrying a wooden cross as he endured repeated whippings ahead of crowds of people.
The reenactment is a custom for Marsa, occurring annually and featuring 350 actors playing the diverse parts.
“I was privileged to see this year’s event and caught one of the moments when the man playing Jesus Christ fell, and was then whipped,” the account wrote on social media.
“It’s a moving sight, one that’s important to witness as a living part of Malta’s history.
“It’s carried out with reverence and respect by the Marsa community that you can really feel. This Passion procession is very much worth seeing if you’re ever in Malta during Easter.”
Following the circulation of the footage online, commenters seemed concerned about actor Clayton Chetcuti’s well-being. However, he assured everyone that he’s “on his feet and working”.
“Fortunately enough, I got to interact with the man who is doing the “hipping’,” he said, explaining that with a fleeting look, the whipper knows exactly where to whip and when.
“Anyway, all this means that we did a great job in the reenactment and those who don’t know what re-enactment means should take a step back and just watch,” he cheekily concluded.
