Watch: ‘My Dearest Mother’ – Maltese Short Film Tackles Grief And Aims For The Global Stage
A powerful new Maltese short film is making waves, and aiming for the international stage.
A daughter and Mother are forced to deal with their past skeletons and shared experiences as they mark the first anniversary of the death of the head of the household. The patriarch may be dead but his presence and impact is a force to be reckoned with by both our protagonists.
His presence, though gone, still lingers, shaping the quiet tension that unfolds between the two women.

Co-written by Bonello Ghio and Maltese actress Marama Corlett, the film explores grief, memory, and the unspoken wounds that bind family together. As the day unfolds, what begins as a solemn remembrance becomes a raw and emotional reckoning with love, loss, and legacy.
Funded by the Arts Council Malta’s Screen Support Scheme (Strand 3 – Short Films), the project has already been submitted to several major international film festivals, including:
- Tampere Film Festival
- Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival
- Encounters Film Festival
- Atlanta Film Festival
- Tribeca Festival
- Glasgow Short Film Festival
- Venezia Short Film Festival
The short stars Jane Marshall as the mother and Marama Corlett as the daughter, with an evocative original score by Edward Carabott and stunning cinematography by Clive Brincat.
Behind the scenes, the team includes Robert Bonello as sound engineer and 1st AD, David Grech as producer, and Mattea Fenech and Nick Theuma on set design.
With its touching narrative, striking visuals, and heartfelt performances, My Dearest Mother (Għażiża Ommi) is shaping up to be one of Malta’s most promising short films, one that’s ready to leave a mark on the global festival circuit.
