Every year, local feasts across the archipelago’s villages transform typical Maltese scenes into breathtakingly vibrant streetscapes, in celebration of tradition, local pride, and immense, wide-spread joy.

But what goes on behind the scenes, when devotion meets obsession and tradition?

“The Festa is a stamp unique to the Maltese islands,” said painter Manuel Farrugia.

“Without them, this would be like Ibiza, all about the beaches.”

While anybody who has ever paraded along and enjoyed the Festa festivities will attest to the level of aesthetic and organisational effort made by coordinators, few ever hear directly from those people.

“I can say that I’ve painted for almost every Maltese festa,” said Farrugia – but even with all of his work, the artist could certainly not pull this all of alone.

You can continue to explore the incredible behind-the-scenes action making Malta’s incredible feasts possible – while learning about all those individuals who make it all possible – in this four-part docuseries about the Maltese Festa.

The series is a co-production between Lovin Malta and Għaqda Nazzjonali Każini tal-Banda, with the support of the Arts Council of Malta.
