Watch: Unanimous 75-0 Vote In Parliament Approves Myriam Spiteri Debono As Malta’s New President

Meet Malta’s new President: Notary Myriam Spiteri Debono, whose nomination was approved unanimously by Parliament yesterday.
Debono united the House, getting a clean sweep of votes in favour of her nomination. Members of Parliament banged on their desks as the Speaker read out the 75-0 vote supporting her election.
Spiteri Debono is set to assume the position of Malta’s 11th President of the Republic on 4th April, taking over from George Vella, who received commendations from both sides of the House.
She will become Malta’s third female president, following in the footsteps of Agatha Barbara and Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca. Additionally, she will be the third Gozitan president, succeeding Anton Buttigieg and Ċensu Tabone
In her absence, former Nationalist MP Francis Zammit Dimech will serve as acting president, under an agreement reached between Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition leader Bernard Grech.
Spiteri Debono united both sides of the House, getting the approval of all 75 MPs present and voting. Malta has 79 MPs in total – Miriam Dalli (PL), Aaron Farrugia (PL), Chris Said (PN), and Rosianne Cutajar (independent) were absent as they were overseas, according to Times of Malta.
