Watch: Woman Hits Out At Rabat’s ‘Stupid And Dangerous’ Feast Street Pedestals

Roadside pedestals in Rabat have become targets of criticism after one woman was forced to squeeze through the narrowed pavements, if not even being forced on the street.

“It’s stupid and something needs to be done,” the woman told Lovin Malta, sending in photos and videos of the pedestals in the roads leading up to the Rabat pjazza.

“Friends of mine told me they couldn’t even pass with a wheelchair or pushchair.”

“They think they can be excused because of feast decorations, and they don’t have to think about the safety of the community,” the woman continued. “The road that these pillars are in is already super narrow, making it very unsafe to walk. In some corners, you literally have to go into the middle of the street to pass.”

Rabat celebrates a number of feasts, with one going down less than two weeks ago and Mnarja being celebrated tomorrow. “It’s not the first time I’ve seen these huge things put up in the street, so it’s not a once-in-a-year type thing.”

“Just to be clear, I never said they shouldn’t decorate for the feast,” the woman clarified, maintaining that authorities should merely ‘be more reasonable’ when it comes to where the pillars are placed.

Back in 2019, St Paul’s Bay had rolled out thin, wall-hugging pedestals that made pavements more accessible. The northern town was praised for the new initiative, with Aġenzija Sapport CEO Oliver Scicluna calling it almost “too good to be true”.

“I really do hope something is done about this,” the woman concluded. “Hopefully the decorations won’t be lost… but rearranged.”
