WATCH: Żabbar Deputy Mayor Embraces EU Residents And Urges Them To Vote In Local Council Election
Żabbar’s vice mayor has published a brief video in which he urged EU nationals ins hometown to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming local council election.
“This messages is to all non-Maltese EU citizens who have done us the honour of choosing Żabbar as your town,” he said. “We really appreciate your economic and social contribution to our lives. Not only do we welcome you but we’d like you to participate further in our local, civic and political life.”
As per EU law, EU citizens who obtain a Maltese residence permit or identity card are automatically entitled to vote in the European Parliament and local council elections. With thousands of EU nationals moving to Malta in recent years, politicians have been faced with a new type of voter.
Some MEP candidates, notably the PN’s Peter Agius and the PL’s Lorna Vassallo, have already tried to tap into these voters by releasing promotional videos in French and German. Now Grech, a PL councillor, is trying to do likewise with Żabbar.
“I invite you to engage more in our community by participating in the local elections,” he said. “Lets work together to give Żabbar what it deserves, which is nothing but the best.”
