Whatever Happened To Benna’s Butter?
Benna has been in the news a lot recently, what with their recent rebranding exercise, a new line of products, and even some viral videos by fans of the company.
However, many people have complained that some of these new products, like the coconut flavoured milk and the butter, have disappeared from stores, often times not being available or in stock.
While people complained that anyone arriving at their local grocery store past 9am would not find any flavoured milk, the Benna Butter is even more of a mystery. Most stores have not restocked the item for a while, leading many to believe that the butter had been discontinued.
However, Jonathan Zammit, Benna’s brand manager, told Lovin Malta that the situation was simple – all stock was sold in a matter of days.
“Benna butter was not removed from the shelves,” said Jonathan. “It was sold out within a few days of it being issued. The reason for not reproducing the product was that since the re-branding exercise has also affected other products in terms of sales volume, there was no extra cream available and priority had to be given to other flagship products rather than butter. The raw milk supply is 100% Maltese and the demand for it was higher than the available supply.”
Similar to the scarcity of the flavoured milk, Benna’s Butter has been missing due to a lack of Maltese milk.
“Raw material permitting,” continued Jonathan, “we should have Benna Butter available again by the end of this year. Benna Butter is made from 100% Maltese fresh cream and therefore we need to have the cream available before it is produced.”
He also pointed out the difference between real butter and margarine, two products that are often mistaken for each other.
“Pure butter, like Benna Butter, is made from 100% fresh cream. What most people term as butter in Malta is in reality margarine made from vegetable oils and water. This is obviously an inferior product to pure butter.”
This is all good news for the Benna Butter fans who thought that their pure Maltese butter product had been cancelled so soon after its release.
