Would You Give Up Your Driving Licence for €25,000?

A new scheme being considered by the government could see drivers receiving €25,000 if they voluntarily give up their driving licence for five years, according to a Times of Malta report.

The proposal is part of a wider effort to reduce the number of private vehicles on Malta’s congested roads, in line with the Air Quality Plan for Malta, first introduced in 2023.

Here’s how it would work: eligible drivers—those who own a car and have held a licence for at least seven years—would receive €5,000 per year for five years if they agree to surrender their licence.

The measure is tied to the “Partial Surrender of Vehicle Licence” programme, which was originally designed to offer mobility alternatives in return for giving up personal car use. These alternatives could include mobility wallets, essentially credits or vouchers for taxi services, public transport or other mobility-related grants.

Although the initiative has reportedly been approved, the exact form of reimbursement, whether through direct cash payments, services, or vouchers, has yet to be confirmed.

This incentive is part of a broader strategy to improve air quality, ease traffic congestion, and encourage more sustainable modes of transport across the islands.
