WWII Veteran And Map Collector Albert Ganado Passes Away At 101
Malta has lost one of its most prominent map collectors and scholars, Dr. Albert Ganado, who passed away at the age of 101.
Ganado served during World War Two as a gunner in the Royal Malta Artillery in late 1941, joining around 70 fellow students from law, architecture, and medicine. He survived two near-death experiences while Axis planes bombed Malta.
After the war, Ganado pursued a career as a lawyer, with a brief stint in politics, before becoming one of the country’s most celebrated figures in Maltese cartography.
He founded the Malta Map Society and spent decades building the collection that would later be digitised and preserved by Heritage Malta.
The Malta Study Center paid tribute to Ganado, recalling their 2018 visit to celebrate the digitisation of his collection. His contribution has helped ensure that Malta’s rich history in map-making remains accessible for generations to come.
Ganado’s legacy lives on not only in his maps but also in the scholarly and cultural impact he left on Malta.
Lovin Malta extends its condolences to the family.
