Loggerhead Turtle Nesting Site Spotted At Ramla Gozo

Article Featured Image

A turtle nesting site, most likely a loggerhead turtle nest, has been spotted at Ramla l-Ħamra in Gozo, the first of the summer season.

It was found during a routine morning patrol by Nature Trust Malta (NTM-FEE) volunteers.

Officers of the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA)  are currently coordinating with Nature Trust Malta (NTM-FEE) to cordon off the area an ensure that the nest is protected.

Meanwhile, the public is asked to act responsibly as excessive noise, trampling and light close to the nesting area may pose a threat to turtle eggs and any hatchlings.

The loggerhead turtle scientifically known as Caretta caretta is a long-living, slowly maturing marine species that inhabits tropical to warm temperate areas. It is globally classified as endangered and is also protected by international law.

If you want to give a helping hand, NTM are asking eager volunteers to send an email to [email protected] for more information.
