Lovin Malta has formally registered itself as a political party with the Electoral Commission, in order to be more effective in bringing about change in the country.

As outlined in the statute sent to the Electoral Commission, the mission of Lovin Malta (LM) is to improve the lives of the people of the Maltese Islands. LM is committed to five simple principles: innovation, transparency, liberty, the protection of the environment and maintaining a healthy quality of life.

A draft manifesto has been published today listing 52 measures to improve the lives of citizens. The proposals are up for public consultation. Among its major platforms, LM would like to reduce the working week to 35 hours, legalise marijuana, introduce English-speakers’ rights, and be the first government to increase ODZ land through the re-greening of built areas.

“We chose to launch our party on April Fool’s Day as a symbol of our irreverent approach to politics… given that Malta’s electoral system puts new parties at a disadvantage”

The party also proposes a raft of transparency measures, including a pledge to put all government transactions and contracts online for public scrutiny. LM further pledged to restructure Maltese democracy in its entirety with a focus on technology – an initiative the party has dubbed ‘e-mocracy’.

A list of proposed billboards have also been published and supporters have been invited to vote for their favourite billboards online. The most popular billboards will be set up during the election campaign if LM is able to generate the necessary funding.

Lovin Malta began as an online publication in April 2016 and has since amassed more than 70,000 followers on social media and a regular average monthly audience of 300,000 unique users.

“Lovin Malta has been effective in shaking up the local media landscape, and this has inspired us to do the same with politics. Many of our readers have often told us to stay away from politics, but as the political landscape continues to degenerate, we have felt obliged to offer a real alternative to voters who feel disenfranchised and under-represented,” an LM spokesman said.

“We chose to launch our party on April Fool’s Day as a symbol of our irreverent approach to politics and to generate maximum publicity. Given that Malta’s electoral system puts new parties at a disadvantage, we need all the help we can get,” the spokesman added.
