Luna’s Terrible Ordeal: Pet Cat Struck By Multiple Pellets In Żurrieq

A pet cat called Luna was shot with multiple pellets in Ħal-Milleri, Żurrieq last week.

Luna was struck all over, including her body, head and paws, and some pellets made their way into her lungs and kidneys. Although the cat survived the ordeal, the pellets that entered her lungs and kidneys cannot be removed. The pellets that hit her eye cannot be removed, placing her at risk of glaucoma, which could require the removal of the eye.

Her owner, Charelle Micallef, is seeking justice for her owner and has reported the shooting to the police, who are investigating the incident.

However, she told Lovin Malta that a vet informed her it was likely an intentional shooting, as Luna was hit by too many pellets for it to have been accidental. The fact that the pellets entered her lungs and kidneys also indicates that the cat was shot at close range.

“Any pet owner can imagine the extent of terror I felt,” she said.

Charelle warned that she doesn’t feel safe in the area. Her car was vandalised there two years ago, drug use is common, and poachers regularly shoot in close vicinity of pedestrians, forcing her to take cover to avoid getting struck by pallets.

She said that the local council informed the police that CCTV cameras in the area weren’t working. However, Żurrieq mayor Rita Grima told Lovin Malta that the cameras are working and that footage of the area has been passed on to the police.
