Lydia Abela ‘Left Speechless’ After Meeting Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska In New York
Lydia Abela said she was left speechless after listening to Ukraine’s first lady Olena Zelenska, the wife of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, discuss the horrors of war during a recent meeting in New York.
“Olena Zelenska invited me to a discussion focusing on the current realities of Ukraine,” Abela said. “I could better experience the suffering that the people of Ukraine are passing through and I was truly left speechless.”
Abela said Malta has done its part to help Ukraine, citing its provision of medical supplies, humanitarian assistance and medical treatment of Ukrainian nationals on Maltese soil.
She made no mention of the West’s policy of sanctions against Russia, which her husband Prime Minister Robert Abela has cast doubt on in recent weeks.
The Abelas are in New York for the 77th United Nations’ General Assembly, an annual general debate of world leaders to discuss global issues. Robert Abela is set to address the debate later on today.
According to a Times of Malta report this morning, the trip is set to cost some €140,000 in public funds.
