A magisterial inquiry was opened last night to investigate the death of a seven-year-old Nigerian girl at the Dominican Sisters Home in Ħaż-Żabbar, where she lived along with her parents and two siblings.

Although the girl died on Sunday night, an announcement was only made yesterday evening. Strangely, the announcement did not come from the police - as is usually the case for deaths - but from the Ministry of Family and Social Solidarity.

The statement was lacking information, merely stating the girl’s cause of death has yet to be established and that the case is being followed closely by the national social welfare agency Appoġġ. State broadcaster TVM reported the girl was suffering from a medical condition.

Back in 2015, the Maltese Dominican Sisters converted part of their Ħaż-Żabbar convent into a home for a family of refugees, with a Syrian family the first to take up residence there.
