Magistrate Antoine Agius Bonnici has upheld Jason Azzopardi’s request for an inquiry to be held into an alleged LESA racket.

The inquiry will investigate whether a number of crimes were committed, including criminal association, corruption, trading in influence, theft, and fraud.

According to Azzopardi, the racket involved the misuse of LESA’s system to transfer fines and penalty points accumulated for driving offences onto unsuspecting tourists who had rented a vehicle while in Malta.

The fines would allegedly be deducted from the tourists’ deposits and kept by car rental companies instead of being transferred to LESA.

Azzopardi named LESA customer care official and PL Paola councillor Neville Camilleri, as well as LESA CEO Svetlick Flores, as people involved in the alleged racket.

Flores reacted to the news by once again denying the allegations and stating he is open to a magisterial inquiry.

LESA insisted that it doesn’t tolerate any form of abuse and said that it instigated a number of legal actions in recent years against people who didn’t pay their fines.
