‘Malta Betrayed Me Three Times’ Parents Of Truck Crash Victim In 2016 Are Still Seeking Justice
On January 5th 2016, the lives of Johanna Boni’s parents’ would change forever. Boni, 27, was on the way to work on her motorcycle when she was run over by a truck, dragged and died. Seven years on, her parents are still fighting for justice, denied even a decent burial.
“Why do they want the public to think that Johanna was a spare part? The worst thing that can happen to a mother is to receive a phone call that her daughter has died and then find out that she was buried like an animal,” stressed Josephine, speaking to Andrew Azzopardi on RTK103.
Josephine spoke about how the motorcycle was never released by authorities, that her phone was stolen and gloves and other items were burnt without the family being notified.
Last year, 53-year-old Carmel Cauchi, who was charged with involuntary homicide was cleared of all charges.
After facing these blows to their grieving, the family realised that their daughter was not even buried in the dress they bought her.
During a family funeral, they discovered that Johanna Boni’s body had been placed in a body bag and while a dress that the parents bought to bury their daughter in was placed in a corner in the coffin.
“When I opened the coffin and found that macabre, I almost took it more seriously than the accident itself,”she said.
She warned that if the Court acts with impunity to with Johanna’s case,, the same will be done to other victims of tragedies.
“I could have taken Johanna to Sicily where she would have been treated with more respect,” mentioned the mother who said that to this day she regrets that Johanna was buried in Malta and feels that Malta betrayed her.
The mother described Johanna as her best friend who was outgoing and knew how to love everyone so much that she once won an award for the best student when she helped a student who had a disability.
“I know that the driver did not kill Johanna on purpose but he never testified either and now he has become an accomplice of the lies that were told in the case. The driver’s company didn’t even send a single flower to Johanna’s funeral!” insisted the mother.
