Malta Celebrates 59 Years Of Independence From Colonial Rule
Malta celebrated 59 years of independence and freedom from foreign rule with the island’s leaders attending a ceremony marking the momentous day in Floriana and Valletta yesterday.
President George Vella, Acting Prime Minister Owen Bonnici and Leader of the Opposition Bernard Grech laid flowers at the Independence Monument in Floriana.
The flower-laying ceremony came after a Pontifical Mass held at St. John’s Co-cathedral where Archbishop Charles Scicluna spoke about the vulnerable in society and condemned any economic model that exploited them.
Malta was liberated from British colonial rule in 1964 after over a century of British colonialism, finally achieving self-governance in 1962, setting the stage for full independence.
On 21st September, 1964, Malta officially became a sovereign nation within the British Commonwealth, following flag-raising ceremonies and the lowering of the British flag.
Leaders like George Borg Olivier and Dom Mintoff played crucial roles in negotiating Malta’s path to independence.
